Using "Dr." and "MD"? together

Just want to clarify the below mentioned. I need to write a brief of a doctor based on a script that is given to me. In that the heading goes as below

Dr. XXXXX XXXXXX, MD

Isn't the "Doctor" duplicated in this as Dr. stands for doctor and MD stands for " Medical Doctor.?

When I checked it from google many have used Dr. and MD /DMD together. Please clarify.

Thanks in Advance
