Using "could" when asking someone to confirm/verify something

"I just want to confirm that I could be included in the committee although I am no longer affiliated with the university"Is the sentence correct or should I use the "CAN" instead of "COULD"?

Either "can" or "could" is grammatical enough, but they are both a bit too vague. Maybe "I just want to confirm that I am still eligible to be included in the committee although I am no longer affiliated with the university."
