Using "BY"

Can you pls tell me??

Someone wrote:

He got the money for lunch singing and passing a hat.

Should I write "He got the money for lunch BY singing and passing the hat?

Which one is correct?

Are they both correct?

Thank you!

Thank you.

But why is it that here BY is not compulsory? Is there an explanation for this?

Thanks again!

The only explanation I know is that some prepositions in some uses are optional. I've never seen them listed in a grammar book section, though:

He got the money (by) singing and dancing.
He got the money (on) Tuesday.
