Using But to start a sentence

Is it ever accpetable, when can I use it? what are some alternatvies to using but?

It is acceptable to start a sentence with "But."
You will see it used a lot in newspaper articles.

For example, I picked this article from today's New York Times newspaper. The third and fourth paragraphs have their first word as "But"
