Using "As you may know" to start a paragraph

In business writing I have read that starting a paragraph with "As you may know" is impolite. Read the last question on this website: http://grammar.ccc.commnet.edu/grammar/grammarlogs4/grammarlogs590.htm. The author of the site says that the phrase patronizes readers and makes them feel bad if they don't know. What is a better phrase to use?

The link does not work. I don't agree that this is always impolite and patronizing. As with many English expressions, a lot depends on the context.

I agree that it's not "always impolite and patronizing."

You could, if you really object to it, say something like "As you may have recently heard/read,..."

It's all about context. Whoever said it was impolite, has no working experience or lacks business skills.
