Taking this a step further, if we add the verb studying to the sentence, it becomes clear that we must use is. Studying requires a singular for of the verb. Can we apply this same logic to the sentence above?

Paintings are/is my hobby.I think everyone on this thread would remain firm in his opinion on this point. All plurals in that position would be analyzed in a similar way by each participant in this thread.
