Using an article multiple times

I have made up a sentence below.

(1) Someone dropped a pencil, an eraser and a ruler on the floor. I wonder who they belong to.

My non-native English speaking friends think I should use the article only once. Their revised sentence is given below.

(2) Someone dropped a pencil, eraser and ruler on the floor. I wonder who they belong to.

Whose sentence is correct? Thank you for your help.
