Using "an" and vowel sound

I read that "an" should only be used before a word that begins with a vowel sound.

1. There is an unicorn.
That will be incorrect according to this website http://www.grammar-monster.com/lessons/an_or_a.htm

2. An LSR... (Linear Recursive Sequence)
Correct.

I don't understand how "linear" begins with a vowel sound.

Thanks. That makes sense. It might get confused when identifying vowel sounds. I should be okay.
