Using a colon or semicolon

I'm wondering whether I should keep these two as separate sentences or not.

"Let me just warn you as an older student. Don't forget that as managers, we are rooting for the whole team."

The context is not really formal enough for a colon or semicolon, but 2 sentences does not tie them together sufficiently. As an older student, let me just warn you—don't forget that as managers we are rooting for the whole team.
