Vocabulary

useful

Hi, i'm from Japan. Help me with the expression below.

"It is more useful to take a subway when in heavy traffic jam."

I know that using 'convenient' instead of 'useful' is more natural, but

is it usable to use 'useful' here?

Thanks in advance.

Not really, and the structure needs work, because when one is 'in a heavy traffic jam', it is difficult to abandon one's car and take the train. I suggest: It is faster/more convenient/more efficient/more expedient to take a subway when there is heavy road traffic / are many traffic jams .
