Hi teachers,

He used to be an army officer.

which is one is correct?

a) What did he use to be?

b) What did he used to be?

It's "use" because of the presence of the verb "did."

It's a frequent mistake, even by native speakers (including me), to use "used to" because you can't hear a difference in "use to" and "used to."
