"Used to be"

Is it common to use "used to be" and "the specific past time frame" in the same sentence? Or "simple past" is common in such a case?

A) This facility used to be run by Mr. Smith in 2005.

B) This facility was run by Mr. Smith in 2005.

Top answer

B is more natural, certainly, but A is possible. For A, you might say it with a pause before "in 2005".
