Used to

Hi,

We can't use "used to" to say how often things happened or how long they took. What do we use instead? Do we use past simple?
For example is it wrong to say: I used to go to gym for 3 months.

Thank you in advance,

Iman

Yeah you can't use "used to" with a one-off event. One alternative would be 'once', such as: "I once went to the gym for 3 months". You can specify how often something happened however, such as: "I used to go to the gym, 3 times a week" or "I used to eat 10 apples a day".

Hi.
I am sure, you can say I used to play basketball during the summers.
So you can define the period of time an event used to occur but maybe in a specific way.
Cheers
