used to...

<<The adjective "amazed" is used to describe positive feelings ...>>

is this sentence correct? Normally, " be used to" means "accustomed to" or "familiar with" , like , "I am used to the students' horrible noise..... " so I wonder if the above sentence is a correct one.

Thanks

Hello Joey

You are correct with your meaning for used to - and well done as that is one of the more difficult meanings for learners to grasp.

However used to can have another meaning when it is not so much 'used to' as 'used' and 'to'.

To use means to utilize -

A broom was used to sweep the floor. He used a broom to sweep the floor..

A car is used to

There are three things to remember about 'used.'

1. be used to -ing

This is an equivalent of 'be accustomed to -ing.'

ex) I am used to living alone.

2. be used to V

As Paco said, this is simply a passive form of the ordinary verb 'use'

ex) We use irons to press clothes. ---> Irons are used to press clothes
