Used to

Sir,

1.My mother used to be a nurse. Now she is a house wife.

2.My mother was a nurse. Now she is hosue wife.

In my opinion the (1) stating the fact in past.
Can we write the (1) as (2).

3.This building used to be a hospital. Now it is a postoffice.

4. This building was a hospital. Now it is a postoffice.

The same doubt about (3) and (4).

One more thing I have use the article "a" before "nurse" and "hospital" .Is this ok?

Plea make it clear.

Thanks.

Yes, the meanings are the same here, and the article is required in front of these singular nouns ('hospital' in the sense of a building takes an article in both AmE and BrE). 'Used to be' stresses the beforehandedness of 'was'.
