Used to

Sir,


Soil is used to make earthen pots.

Soil is used to making earthen pots.


Which one is correct?

I have some confusion with the word "used to". In above sentence the word "used to " is not like the "used to" used for past repeated habit e.g(I used to smoke when I was young.).


How can I differenciate such problem.

One use of the word "used to" to show that we are accustomed to smoething.


I am used to reading fast.

Can I use the word "used to" with past form of "to be " verb.

e.g

I was used to reading fast.

is this sentence correct?

Hi Hanuman, Right you are-- there are three verbs: (1) used to = past habit/condition. This verb exists only in this past form. I used to eat with a knife and fork.

Right you are-- there are three verbs:

(1) used to = past habit/condition. This verb exists only in this past form.

I used to eat with a knife and fork.
I used to live in Los Angeles.


(2) use = employ, utilize

I use chopsticks to eat.
I use chopsticks for eating. (Active voice)

Chopsticks are used to eat.
