Used in past simple tense

Hi

Would you say that the is optional here?

(talking about a student's assignment in which he was to write a paragraph using only the past tense)

He had used some of the sentences in the present tense.

He had used some of the sentences in present tense.

Thanks,

Tom

Personally, I try to remember to use "the", but I don't always. It seems to me that proper usage has "the", but the absence of "the" usually goes unnoticed because it's not a really serious mistake. Others may have different views on this topic.
