Would you say that the is optional here?
(talking about a student's assignment in which he was to write a paragraph using only the past tense)

Personally, I try to remember to use "the", but I don't always. It seems to me that proper usage has "the", but the absence of "the" usually goes unnoticed because it's not a really serious mistake. Others may have different views on this topic.
