Use third conditionals in reported speech

In the reported speech, we often convert a tense into past one level. However, I cannot understand how can I use third conditionals in reported speech. Therefore, I would really appreciate it if someone could let me know whether the following sentence is grammatically correct and natural.

He told me if he had worked hard, he would have been one of best students in the class.

Top answer

dileepa He told me (that) if he had worked hard, he would have been one of best students in the class. Yes, this is OK. In polished English, my personal preference is to include the word "that".
