Use past tenses always after this type of words?

Do you always need to have past tenses after the word 'knew" in sentences?

I knew he did it.

I think I learned from fourms here that with certain "feeling" words that denote one-time occurances, past tenses are what are normally used like this.

I felt he was angry/happy.
