Use ordinal numbers "the first/first'

Hello, comrades, I am a little confused with the use of these ordinal numbers.
Can you explain and correct these sentences.
- She is the first/first in the class.
- We were third/the third in the standings.

Top answer

- We were third/the third in the standings. You may use either. Ordinals may be used as nouns or adjectives.

I would not want to use 'the'.

I stood first in the class; She stood first in the class.
We were third in the standings; We were the third group in the standings.

Thank you for your answer. But If I were to choose the better, which option would I choose?

I would omit 'the' in your sentences, as karansardana has done.
