Use only indirect speech while talking with people?

I learned that I should use "indirect speech" when I talk with people by English.
Do I really have to use "indirect speech" in any case when talking with someone by English?

Because I often use the "direct speech" so that the listeners could easily feel what I should feel and how I should react.

For example,

(Indirect speech)
My wife asked why I wanted to quit learning Vietnamese and said that if I quit studying it now, it would mean that I just waste a lot of time & money spent for studying Vietnamese up to now. She said that I should continue to study Vietnamese in that school.

(Direct speech)

Before my saying what happened, I've changed my tone a little bit and tell to the listeners like my friends in usual like this.
Last night, my wife said " why do you want to quite learning Vietnamese" " If you quite studying it now, it means you just waste a lot of time & money for studying Vietnamese up to now" " You should continue to study Vietnamese, okay?".
So I answered " Okay, I think about it again".

For the "indirect speech", I use it in order to describe something or events that are not important. But for the other cases, I so often use the "direct speech". I believe that when the matters occurs, the best way to convey what I feel or to make the listeners easily feel could be the telling by direct speech.
Is this thought of mine really wrong? Do I have to use only indirect speech while talking with people?

Thank you in advance for your teaching.

There is certainly no rule that says you must always use indirect speech, But habitual use of direct speech to give details of trivial conversations is often seen as a suggestion of lack of education. Clive

Wow! I didn't consider that it could indicate the lack of education. I need to correct my habit. Thank you so much for your teaching.
