Vocabulary

use of "YET"

Is it write to use "YET" in a situation where traditionally it was associated with the word "NOT", e.g., "Are we there yet". I believe there are only two ways to express a situation like that; 1. Aren't we there yet? 2. Are we there now?

Top answer

, "Are we there yet". In declarative sentences, it is indeed associated with NOT. In questions, however, there's no such restriction.

  • One could argue that a sentence such as 'I've yet to see her come to work on time' is not a negative one but the yet here does negate the meaning.
