Hello dear teachers; what does "would" refer to in "he would take long walks", please? It doesn't refer to a past habit, does it?

Top answer

The context referred back to the time when the tiger was roaming free which is the past. "would" is needed to reflect habits, much like "I remember when I was about 10, grandfather would take me and my brother to his cabin at lake Barryyessa fishing. We would sing together by the campfire and watch the stars on a clear night.
