use of word(bask)

Is it a correct sentence if I say
"They are basking on/by the fireplace."
(I meant they are getting warmth.)
So is there any other better expression.

The preposition is as shown, but it's not a good use of "bask". Try this:

They are basking in the warmth of the fireplace.
