Use of with

Sometime back I was reading a thread in which someone had commented that we say "I work with XYZ company" or "I have a job with XYZ company" instead of "I work for XYZ company" because companies like to think of themselves as human beings and equal partners, and use of "with" probably makes the employee feel better about himself.

But I wonder why we use "with" in the following sentences. The above explanation doesn't seem to apply to these sentences.

1. "I have an account with XYZ bank." (Shouldn't it be "I have an account in XYZ bank" ?)
2. "I lodged a complaint with the police." (Shoildn't it be "I lodged a complaint to the police" ?)

#1 and #1 are both correct as they stand. I suspect that the rationale is the same as for the employee-employer relationship. There is a complementary benefit involved.
