Use of were and was....

I have a question about the use of were and was.
Here is the sentence in question:

"The immediate and delayed recall was impaired."

Is it correct to use was in this case? And what if I were to remove "The"?

e.g.: "Immediate and delayed recall was impaired."

And lastly, what if I used a possesive noun?

e.g. "His immediate and delayed recall was impaired."

Or should I use were? Thanks.

I can understand 'an immediate recall' and 'a delayed recall', but I don't understand how a recall can be both. In addition, how can a recall be 'impaired'? You probably need to find another word.

Sorry! I should have provided more context. I am referring to the recalling of learned information, as in remembering something. Specifically, I am reporting the results of memory testing. For example, someone is given a list of words and are asked to recall the list immediately after presentation of the list and then again to recall the list after a time delay. In reporting the results we like to
