Is the use of under way natural here?

My dental treatment was under way and I couldn't leave the town for two consecutive weeks.

"Underway" is one word (US English). The sentence is completely grammatical, but unusual-sounding. The problem is that "underway" is rarely, if ever, used in connection with dental work.
