Use of "trending"

Have I correctly used the adjective ‘trending’ in the given sentence? If not, what adjective can I use instead?

Such a criminal act has been a trending topic in our university.

Such a criminal act has been a trending topic in our university. Hi 'trending topic' sounds funny to me. Normally, i'd use the phrase 'hot topic' to refer it to being popular at the moment, if that is what you're going for.

Isn't 'trending' a technical term used in one or more of the computer-based social media?

I haven't heard it used outside that kind of context.

I don't think so, in the sense that I believe the word 'trending' is used in its ordinary English meaning even when it occurs in the context of social media. I don't know of any special technical meaning for it, as opposed to its ordinary meaning, such as you might

Who knows. I might. I prefer it to "hot topic" in any case. The verb "trend" has been with us far longer than Twitter has.
