Use of 'tote'

Hi

Could you please tell me if the word tote meaning carry is just informal or totally slang? Is this word common in BrE too?

She was always toting a James Hadley Chase novel to her office.

Best,

Tom

It implies a non-serious motive. For example, maybe it was to impress others.

It's informal, not slang.

More than 'carry' it can suggest difficulty, as in lugging, hauling.

"Always" is a bit redundant. To tote denotes habitual practice in this context.
