Use of tortuous

Hi

I am sure that the word torturous (involving or causing torture) is very common among native speakers. But could you please tell me about the use of tortuous (full of twists and turns) in everyday conversation? Is is common too?

The path was long and tortuous.

Thanks,

Tom

I feel, tortuous is less common though not wrong. For me, The path was long and agonizing - looks like a strong sentence. It you wanted to keep it simple, The path was long and painful - should do.

"Tortuous" is not common. You mainly see it as an illiterate mistake when they mean "torturous". I would call "tortuous" literary, bordering on ceremonious.
