Use of "to"

"The first thing we usually did was put on our headsets to talk to mission control."

In this sentence, some of my coworkers think it should be:

"The first thing we usually did was TO put on our headsets to talk to mission control."

Why is there no TO in this sentence?

A pseudo-cleft with do does not require the full infinitive after the linking verb. The to is optional.

What we did was (to) watch TV.
