Use of "they"/"their"

Is using "they"/"their" the best solution in English when there's no way to specify the sex of the subject? example:

Then my mother served dessert. She is a really good cook, so she got plenty of compliments. But there was always one guest who didn't say much—the one who had chosen the card. They examined their dessert with a slight frown until...
