Use of "these ones" or simply "these"

What is the rule of grammar that makes it improper to say "these ones"?

This rule:

It is improper to say "these ones" or "those ones".

It's apparently only an American rule, not a British one, but even those ones who speak American English don't always obey the rule.

It's either these or those with is already plural adding "ones" is bad grammar. I was taught American grammar that adding "ones" is bad grammar and would have flunked that test. I never heard anyone say that, these ones those ones, in all of my schooling until I joined the workforce and was appalled like where did these people go to school.
