Use of "their-own"

The grammar check on my apple always corrects usage of "their own" or "his own" indicating that their-own and his-own are correct. What gives? Is this a new rule? And what is the grammatical basis and reason for the hyphen? I've never heard of this usage until now. Is Apple right?

Not right, of course, but I have no idea why their software is acting up. I don't use a spell check or grammar check because just such idiocies occur.
