Use of the words 'former' and 'latter'

Is this a correct definition of the proper use of the term "latter"?

"The terms the former and the latter are used instead of a pair of names. If three or more persons or objects are referred to, the words first or last should be used."

Thank you,

Jo

Hello Jo, Technically, your explanation is right. However, this rule is often violated even by well educated people. Nevertheless, I'd say sticking to the rule may help minimize any confusion if any.
