Use of the word "yard"

Hello,

The last couple of years I've been hearing the expression the batter went yard meaning the batter hit a home run. The old expression was the batter went long. My question is: Is it correct to use the noun yard as an adverb?

I've never heard that expression. But it is slang, which does not lend itself to the usual lexical analysis. Its history goes back to the Baltimore Orioles, my home team when I was growing up.
