Use of the word 'write' in direct speech

I have one more question: Can I use the word write in direct speech like the word say?

I said, "Who are you?"

I wrote, "who are you?"

What do you native English speakers think? Thank you so much as usual!

Yes, if you are writing; it is not 'speech', of course.

DS: I wrote, 'I am leaving.'
IS/RS: I wrote that I was leaving.
