I think that #2 is wrong because the word rain is uncountable and cannot be preceded by a determiner such as a.

No, coloraday, there is nothing wrong with using a determiner in some contexts before qualified uncountable nouns:

A light rain
A radiant beauty
A clear understanding
A certain knowledge

etc.
