Use of the word 'per'

I was told that the word 'per' is not part of the English language and that you should not combine different languages in writing a letter. Isn't the word 'per' part of the French language or what language is it from?

There is nothing wrong with using the word 'per' in English.
As with all words, of course, it needs to be in a suitable context.

English has taken words from many languages, and they are now English words. There is a fine line, though, and you have to stay on your toes. If a word appears in a major dictionary without comment, it is an English word.
