Use of the word dissociate

Hi

Can we use the word dissociate like this?

dissociate = let them go; give away

[Parents to a child who is very possessive about his things and does not want them to be given to anyone]

1) Frank, you must learn to dissociate yourself from the things you don't need. They may benefit someone else.

2) She was so possessive about her clothes that she couldn't even think of dissociating herself from the dresses she knew she would never wear again.

Thanks,

Tom

Thanks, fivejedjon.

Could you please provide me with better words/phrases that fit in the examples I gave?

I would say something like: let go of in both situations.

Thanks again.

I hope these are 100% natural now?
