Use of the word

Is this sentence correct? If is is, what does the word 'serve' mean?

I think it needs to be change to 'serve the customers' not 'serve the table'.

A waiter was serving the table.

It's commonly said and, in my opinion, easily understood. You could consider it a bit of 'waiter jargon '. eg I work as a waiter.
