Use of the preposition "of"

"He wore his shoes inside of the house." Is the "of" just redundant, or is it grammatically incorrect?

Top answer

My understanding is that there are some localities where 'inside of the house' is used; but that most would consider it incorrect. The inside of the house is cooled by air-conditioning, so is comfortable in the summer. The air-conditioner is located inside the house.

It reminds me of the very old gag: "Outside of a dog, a book is a man's best friend. Inside of a dog, it's too dark to read."
