Essay & Composition Writing

Use of the French language in British literature

Hello,

I am taking the liberty to write to you in order to ask for some advice.

I would like to collect (in order to complete a university essay) extracts from different texts as well as interviews relating to the use of the French language in British literature, between theXVIth and XXth centuries.

This includes the French words used by Shakespeare in his plays (e.g. the characters of Katherine of Valois and her lady-in-waiting in ‘Henry V’) as well as the frequent use of words or sentences in French in the XIXth century novels.

I would also be looking at examining the use of the French language by some characters in classical British novels, who are introduced into these novels as being born and bred in France, as they used in theory their own mother-tongue in the original text.

It would be very interesting for me to be able to interview people responsible for British cinema or television adaptations of classical novels that involve the creation of such characters.

I think that your experience in similar fields could be very helpful for me, in order to know where or to whom it would be better to ask for advice on this precise subject.

Even though my active level in English leaves something to be desired, I think I am able to understand written or spoken English perfectly.

Please forgive any mistakes or misunderstandings in this text and I thank you in advance for any advice or recommendations.

In addition, should you know of anyone able to help me on this matter; I thank you to be so kind as to forward this message to them.

Yours truly,

John C. Samuel
