Use of 'the' before a day of the week?

Hi, I often hear people say "I will be there on the Sunday" or "On the Friday we went to the beach" etc. To me the 'The' signifies that it is not the next Sunday in the first instance.

A Friend of mine says this is incorrect. I cannot find anything on the internet to prove this either way. Can anyone out there help please?

If we use 'the' in this way, we are normally talking about a day in a period of time of a week or less known to both parties in the conversation. I shall be in Berlin for five days next week I have a business meting on the Wednesday.
