Use of "the"

Why is "the" not used with names of universities as abbreviations like "the NUML" but "the" is used with abbreviations like "the UN" , "the NATO."

I don't get the reason behind it.

There is no reason. Soon after these names are invented people get used to saying them a certain way. Everybody copies everybody else in the way they say it. Eventually everyone is saying it that way, and nobody knows why.

By the way, it's "NATO", not "the NATO".
