Use of "the"

The heat was getting to be too much for me.

The nights are getting longer.

The above examples are from the Oxford online dictionary about the word "the".

I do know the basic rules about using the definite in classic examples but find it hard to apply in the other contexts.

Could you please explain to me how to understand the use of "the" in terms of the rules regard its usage?
