With proper geographical names (capitalised names), generally no. There are some exceptions. Names that are grammatically plural often have articles (e.g. "the Philippines", "the Andes"). Traditionally, certain country names had articles (e.g. "the Ukraine"), but this is becoming less common. Seas and oceans often have articles (e.g. "the Atlantic Ocean" or "the Atlantic"), as do deserts, forests and similar classifications ("the Sahara"). Various other exceptions exist (e.g. "the South Pole").

Descriptive phrases (as opposed to proper names), such as "the north of India", follow normal grammatical rules.
