Use of 'the'

I'm writing a teachers' guide to an EFL book and I have a doubt.
Each lesson starts this way:

Start class by checking (the) homework.

I don't know if I should use "the" in this case. Should I or should I not use it? Why / why not?

Many thanks!

flaviaromao I don't know if I should use "the" in this case. It is unnecessary, since the sentence structure is headline style. Otherwise, 'the' would also precede 'class'.
