Use of "the"

Hi,
You say "go to school, go to church, go to market.."

without "the", but you say "go to the post office, go to the library".

Why is it so?

Thank you,

zmon

  • Because the usage without 'the' cannot be applied to 'post office' and 'library'.

Yoong LiatI wonder whether the above usage is the same in AmE.
I go to the market, to the supermarket, to the grocery store. Otherwise the usage is the same (regarding school, church, and prison).
