Use of 'the'

Can you tell me if the following sentence is correct or not? If not pls correct it...
'Nowadays the mutton is more expensive than the chicken.'

When we talk about things in general or facts, we do not use an article, therefore your sentence should read:

'Nowadays, mutton is more expensive than chicken.'

Could it be because he wrote it that way because he uses a language that must have an article attached to the noun (to determine gender?)?
